DIY Car Checks You Can Do at Home Before a Long Trip

Heading out on a road trip? Nothing puts a damper on your adventure faster than a car that decides to act up on the highway. The good news? With a few simple checks at home, you can avoid most headaches and make sure your car is ready for the journey. Here’s our go-to checklist from our shop to your driveway.

1. Check Your Fluids

Fluids keep your car running smooth. Grab your dipstick and check your engine oil—make sure it’s at the right level and looks clean. Don’t forget coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Low or dirty fluids can lead to serious problems, so topping them off (or replacing if needed) is always worth the time.

2. Inspect Your Tires

Tires are your car’s only contact with the road, so they deserve some attention. Check the air pressure in all tires—including the spare—and compare it with the numbers in your owner’s manual or the sticker on your door frame. Look for worn spots, cracks, or nails that might have made themselves at home. If the tread is low or the tires look rough, a pre-trip replacement is way cheaper than dealing with a blowout miles from anywhere.

3. Test Your Lights

Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, reverse lights… they all need to work. Walk around the car and test everything. If a bulb is out, swap it before you leave. It keeps you safe and helps avoid tickets along the way.

4. Check Your Brakes

A quick brake test can save you a lot of trouble. Press the pedal—it should feel firm, not soft. Listen for squeaks or grinding when driving slowly in a safe area. If something feels off, give us a call at (614) 488-8507 before your trip—we can make sure your brakes are road-ready.

5. Wipers and Windshield

Clear vision is a must, especially if the weather decides to surprise you. Make sure your wipers aren’t cracked or worn, fill up your washer fluid, and test the spray nozzles. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in rainy or dusty conditions.

6. Look Under the Hood

Take a quick peek at belts and hoses. If you see cracks, frays, or leaks, don’t ignore them. These can cause breakdowns fast, so let our pros take a look if you spot anything unusual.

7. Pack an Emergency Kit

Even with a perfectly prepped car, it’s smart to be ready. Keep a first-aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, basic tools, water, and a blanket in your trunk. Being prepared makes unexpected situations much easier to handle.

Taking 30–60 minutes to do these simple checks can save you a lot of stress—and a lot of money. If anything seems off or you’re unsure about a repair, swing by our shop in Columbus, OH.
